Great Oaks Country Club History

Great Oaks Country Club was founded in 1971 and nestled in the rolling hills of Oakland County is in the heart of Rochester, Michigan and one of metro Detroit’s best kept secrets. Once a Black Angus farm, Great Oaks was purchased from Howard McGregor, a prominent businessman of the Rochester Area, by the Slavik family in 1968 for development. In 1971 Great Oaks Country Club was opened featuring the famous McGregor Mansion as the Clubhouse. Towering oak trees lined the boulevard to the clubhouse, providing it with its name. With continued growth the mansion was replaced with current 43,000 square foot clubhouse in 1989. Since then, Great Oaks has become a social hub of Rochester and the only member owned, family-oriented private country club in the area.

Great Oaks championship golf course was the vision of renowned course architect William Newcomb. Following the master plan of the Membership, updates to the course from our $3.5M renovation in 2006 to current renovations in 2019, have been completed by McCumber Associates. Great Oaks has had the honor of hosting the Michigan Amateur Qualifier and the Michigan Ladies Amateur.

Other recreational activities enjoyed including the North Oakland County Summer Suburban League Tennis Program and our very popular Swim Program, Michigan Inter-Club Swim Association (MICSA).

A sought-after country club wouldn't be complete without the best food in the area and Great Oaks also holds that distinction. Executive Chef Nate Lewis heads a talented culinary team and is committed to using seasonal, fresh produce along with creative menus for your dining pleasure. Celebrate your special occasion or enjoy one of our social dining events and we will provide a memorable affair with an expertly trained and attentive staff and beautifully set event.

Today, Great Oaks continues to thrive with an active family membership providing activities for all interests. We exist for the full enjoyment and camaraderie of our membership and pride ourselves in offering an extraordinary array of club experiences. Bricks and mortar may build a club; however, it is the membership that creates a warm and welcoming environment and Great Oaks is well known in the region for their hospitality and bringing members together in life-long friendships.
